Choosing the right class of use
- Social, domestic and pleasure: personal use only, no business.
- Carriage of own goods: carrying your own tools, equipment or stock for your business, for example a plumber or florist.
- Haulage / hire and reward: carrying other people’s goods for payment, such as removals.
- Courier: multi-drop parcel delivery, including for delivery platforms.
Using a van for courier work on a carriage-of-own-goods policy can leave you uninsured for that journey. Tell your insurer exactly how the van is used.
Tools and goods
A van policy covers the vehicle; the contents usually need separate cover. Tools in van cover protects your equipment, often with overnight conditions. Goods in transit covers stock or customers’ goods while being carried. Tradespeople often get tools cover through a trade package instead.
In the US
Vans used for business typically need a commercial auto policy; personal auto policies commonly exclude business use beyond commuting. If employees use their own vehicles for work errands, consider hired and non-owned auto liability.
