How fleet insurance is priced
Small fleets are often priced like a group of individual vehicles. Larger fleets are priced more on their own claims experience, so a good record and strong driver management can make a big difference. Insurers may ask about driver licence checks, training, maintenance schedules and telematics.
Managing fleet risk
- Check driving licences regularly (in Great Britain, with the driver’s consent, via DVLA’s licence checking service).
- Set clear policies on phones, fatigue and journey planning.
- Keep maintenance and defect records.
- Report incidents quickly; delays can increase costs.
In the UK, HSE guidance treats work-related driving as part of an employer’s health and safety duties.
Grey fleet and occasional business use
When employees use their own cars for work (beyond commuting), their personal policies need business use. Employers should check this, and some buy contingent liability cover to protect the business if an employee’s cover fails.
